Wierd! – Malaysian Muslims warned over greeting Hindus

Sify News reports

Kuala Lumpur: The head of Malaysia’s Shariat Department has asked Muslims in the country not to greet Hindus a Happy Diwali, a directive the government distanced itself from saying it is a narrow interpretation of Islam.

Fauzi Mustaffar, head of Shariah department, in an email directive to office staff has said that Diwali was a religious festival in which Hindu deities were worshipped and greeting Hindus on the occasion was like practising polytheism to Muslims.

Good at least the government later distanced itself from this

Government distanced itself from the controversial directive. Abdullah Zin, a minister in Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi’s Department, said the email sent by Mustaffar was his “personal view,” according to the daily.

“He (Mustaffar) has no authority to say Muslims shouldn’t wish Hindus because that is like a fatwa (edict). And fatwas can only come from the National Fatwa Council and Jakim,” Zin was quoted as saying.

“Just because you wish someone Happy Diwali does not mean that you have embraced his beliefs and religion. It is not syirik (practising polytheism). In a multi-religious and multi-racial country like ours, it is important to live in harmony and be nice to one another,” the minister said.

When you see things like this it makes you wonder where do these guys get their ideas from? And what is the psychology behind such statements?

I think people do this out of necessity to gain some limelight and show their importance. They end up making fool of themselves instead.

There is no dearth of such stupidity in the world. Krish maintains an interesting Hindutva Hall Of Shame.

Absolute madness. Malaysia was amongst the select few states that can show to the world how islamic values and modernity can live side by side but…

Adnan, looks like there is a big competition around the world as to who can come up with the most stupid idea :). Anyway it is funny to read such stories.

It is weird as almost every Malaysian I met goes to lengths in explaining that they are very tolerant culture.

Probably this was a one odd experience in Malaysia. Maybe That is why the govt. was very quick in distancing itself from such an order.

Nothing unusual or odd. There is a strong anti-Hindu, anti-Christian attitude among the Muslim mullahs in Malaysia. They also want to be ‘real muslims’ like the Saudis. Malaysian Tamils (the only significant ‘Indian’ group in Malaysia) are the poorest and most downthrodden people in the country. Partly because of poor education and partly because of their Harijan heritage. The north Indians (Brahmins), Sindhis and Sikhs are all well off comparatively but they are a tiny minority.

Those Tamils who have education or trade skillsin Malaysia should consider migrating. Send a brief email about yourself and family to “easymigration@iprimus.com.au” if you are from Malaysia for a free assessment to migrate to Australia.

Goodman is right and it is time that educated Tamils take his suggestion seriously. Malaysia and Indonesia known for a gentle version of Islam are fast drifting towards extremism. The meeting of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in November last was a shocking display of divisiveness. Some speeches were overtly racist and called for violence to settle religious /political differences. One of the delegates, Hasnoor Sidanng Hussain declared: “ UMNO is willing to risk lives and bathe in blood in defence of race and religion “. Education Minister Hishnumuddin Hussain unsheathed a keris (Malay dagger) at the meeting, in an blatant attempt to pander to the racist/religious hardliners in the party. The Prime Minister and his deputy disavowed the inflammatory rhetoric in their speeches. Still the chest thumbing makes it clear the Prime Minister is increasingly under pressure from the Islamic extremists. Earlier a mob ransacked and attacked a meeting intended to discuss religious pluralism; the clear message is that equating Islam with another religion is blasphemy and is unacceptable. The minority groups of Christians, Hindus, Sikhs Chinese are increasingly getting worried.

In the neighboring Indonesia, the world’s largest muslim majority nation, even more troubling scenes are playing out. Few months back, a radical Islamic preacher publicly called for the murder of Bush during his Indonesian visit. In Jakarta three muslims are on trial for allegedly decapitating three Christian school girls as they were walking to the school. In the main island of Java several churches have been closed by young muslim thugs. The mainstream muslim groups are themselves worried by the radicalization. Both the countries, religious freedom is protected under the constitution; but at the ground level, minority rights are slowly being denied/withdrawn. Both states have their own shariat code and the lines delieanating the religion and the state is slowly being erased. It is true the vast majority in both countries are tolerant in their practice of religion and the fundamentalists have limited audience. But they are gaining traction and there is a danger that the population can be swayed by the emotional appeals of militant preachers. It is time that the moderates initiate a debate, what is the type of Islam and society they will have, now and in future, before it is late, as the muslim psyche is highly incendiary. As I have always held out in my comments, moderate Islam is non existent and there can be only degrees in extremism.

PI, this is what I have been saying for long that

    > Islam is violent
    > Muslims can not coexist peacefully in a flourishing plural society
    > they will increase their numbers and create a demographic disaster etc

My detailed comments are in the article Is Islam Violent. In Malysia they have destroyed more than 300 temples; you are worried for one disused structure in Ayodhya.

Christianity and Islam both worship the God of Abraham, Moses and Elijah. Both have the same God and same origins.

I stand by Muslims, against Hinduism and all the garbage monkey worship it preaches and destroys peoples lives.

I stand by Muslims against Idols.

Jesus did not teach us explicitly to harm any one, and taught us message of restraint. However, Jesus Christ is the same God of the old testament, that commanded the idol worship to be destroyed.

I stand by Muslims and call them as my brothers and co inheritors in faith of Abraham.

True Christians and Muslims are against Idol worship and want to see their country men liberated from demonic idols and evil spirits.

Any Christian who sides with Hindus is a traitor, and he deserves the same fate that fell on Idol worshipers in the old testament

Loving your enemies does not mean you accept their monkey worship and garbage hinduism.

HINDRAF in Malaysia is an demonic organization, and I stand by Muslims and give them my full support to eradicate it out.

any Christian that stands by Hindraf is a someone who partakes the food of Idols as warned by Paul.

Malaysia should eradicate this hindu terrorist organization Hindraf out.

Long be the God of abraham worshipped. One God, everlasting GOD. not dirty idols or monkeys.

LORD JESUS CHRIST’S NAME BE BLESSED. Cursed is Hinduism. and Cursed is every dirty idol.

Yes christian, you can stand by yourself and pray to a dead moron on the cross and send your little baby girl or your mother to mohamed to have anal intercourse. Wake up. You are in a dreamland. There is no god or any kind of garbage in your religion. You are just too dumb to realize it.

btw, yes, Jesus died a horrific death. And no god came to his aid.
